It is a little known fact that Yoga first began in Africa, specifically Kemet (ancient Egypt). The Kamites of Northeastern Africa were educated in a system of higher knowledge called the ‘mystery System’. They had to acquire a high level of competency in Yoga before they were considered mentally and spiritually prepared to master the rigors of mathematics, engineering, medicine, astronomy, astrology, architecture, literature, religion, ethics and philosophy, it will be great to see more people of African descent reclaim this practice and incorporate it into their modern lives. These ancient Egyptians migrated to India and passed on teachings and spiritual practices that later evolved to Hindu and yoga practices, my inspiration to search about yoga came from banter with me taking jabs at a friend who carried her yoga mat around in her car and never uses it. A part of #keithharing ‘free Africa’ painting inspired the yoga poses in the opened book,I thought his work would be perfect on my loan from arthistory because he was pretty vocal about the apartheid that was happening in South Africa at that time. The closed book with the #Nok head questions the documentation of African art history, I was subtlety thinking about #davidhockney swimming pool paintings while painting mine, where a voyeur watches, capturing the happening of the time at present
